A common (and fair) question about any directory: does paying get you a better spot? Here's exactly how Pinstack's ranking works, so there's no ambiguity.
What determines organic ranking
Pinstack's default ranking uses a time-decayed score based on community upvotes similar in spirit to how sites like Hacker News rank posts. In plain terms:
- Net upvotes (upvotes minus downvotes) matter
- Recency matters a product with strong recent engagement can outrank an older product with more total votes but less recent activity
- Nothing else factors into this score. Not payment, not how long you've been listed, not how complete your profile is beyond the basics needed to be approved.
This means a free listing with strong genuine community support can rank above a paid one because ranking and payment are handled as two separate systems entirely.
What paid features actually do
- Featured placement gives temporary top position within a category page for the period it's active. It does not change the underlying score it's a separate display slot, clearly labeled "Featured."
- Verified badge signals the listing has been checked by the team. It doesn't add points to ranking either.
Both are opt-in, both are clearly marked when active, and both stop affecting placement once they expire (for Featured) the listing returns to ranking purely on its community score. Current prices are on the Pricing page.
Why we built it this way
A directory only stays useful if people trust that what's on top is actually good, not just paid for. If ranking could be bought outright, the upvote system would become decorative rather than meaningful, and the whole point of the directory helping people find genuinely useful tools breaks down.
What this means if you're deciding whether to list
- A free listing is a complete, real option not a crippled version of a paid one
- Paid options buy visibility for a period, not a permanent ranking advantage
- The fastest way to rank well organically is genuine usefulness that earns upvotes, same as it would anywhere else
